03.00 pm Call to action: redevelop and promote tourism destinations through investing in sustainability and biodiversity

The pandemic and the lockdowns made us rediscover and revalue destinations in ours province of residence, appreciating places considered secondary, wondering about the effects on nature such as: the presence of wild boar, deer and wildlife in the cities; the nesting of birds in unprotected areas, the arrival of dolphins in the ports and marinas of Cagliari, Trieste, Venice and other sea cities.

The current sanitary crisis teaches and prompts us to rethink and value the economy and tourism models that depend on a biodiversity and sustainable approach: from the supply of food and fresh water, till soil fertility, pollination of flora by insects, prevention of soil erosion; from climate change control to cultural services related to the enjoyment of natural species, habitats and landscapes.

How much do we know about how sustainability and biodiversity contribute to make all our destinations more attractive and competitive? What initiatives can be taken to involve tourism, institutional, political, cultural and social stakeholders in achieving the sustainable objectives of 2030 Agenda?

Which are the 10 priority Actions that can be transformed into rules of engagement, to deal with and manage threats to biodiversity in a new more effective way and also to ensure the health and garantee  a well-being of tourists and inhabitants of the destinations?
